VIVAnews - A humanitarian organization Pos Keadilan Peduli Umat (PKPU) is building as many as 1,000 temporary dwellings for the quake victims in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra. "We are targeting that the homes will be ready in the next one week," said PKPU Rescue Manager, Yasin, who like most Indonesians goes by one name, said in Padang Pariaman.
The cemented-floor lodgings called 'house of smile' have 6x3 meters in size with a height of 2.5 meters. The roofs and walls are made of tarp while the beams are ridgepoles are of wooden construction.
According to Yasin, PKPU has built 40 units of houses in Padang Pariaman. He claimed that PKPU prioritizes the development of 'house of smile' for the victims whose homes are destroyed. In addition, local people are involved in the house set-up.
According to him, one house costs around Rp 3.5 million, which is contributed by foreign and local donors.
Yasin said that while timbers are difficult to attain in Padang Pariaman, the materials are supplied by Tasikmalaya, a region in West Java which was shocked by a 7.3 on the Richter Scale quake in September 2009.
PKPU deploys 125 volunteers during the quake mitigation actions in West Sumatra, that are responsible of live-saving and trauma-healing.
Padang Pariaman Regency and Padang Municipality are the worst regions in West Sumatra affected by the 7.9 on the Richter Scale quake which rocked the province on September 30. The Earthquake killed more than 1,000 people and devastated tens of thousands of buildings.
