VIVAnews - Environmental expert from the University of Indonesia, Firdaus Ali, said Jakarta's traffic jam has been resulted in considerable amount of losses.
The losses have affected the citizens in every level starting from government officials to lower-class society.
“Based on the 2008 research, Jakarta's total amount of losses were estimated at Rp 28.1 trillion per year,” Ali said at the 'Jakarta's Polluted Air: A Serious Threat To Public Health' talk show in Jakarta, Thursday, September 10.
He also said the amount of losses were higher than the sum of Regional Budget that reaches Rp? 20.59 trillion.
“It's nothing compared to Jakarta's Regional Budget,” he said.
Details of the losses could be found in several sectors. Due to the traffic jam, there has been a fuel waste which has inflicted around Rp 10.7 trillion of losses per year.
“Public transport owners throughout Jakarta are also affected by the jam and lose Rp 1.9 trillion per year,” Ali said.
Moreover, he said, the traffic jam has also cut people's productive time. As a result, they suffer about Rp 9.7 trillion of losses per year.
“People also have to provide health care fund that's worth more than Rp 5.8 trillion,” he said.
Meanwhile, traffic jam has also been the biggest pollutant in Jakarta by contributing approximately 90 percent of pollution.
“The rest are coming from households and other activities. Industry doesn't contribute much because Jakarta has a small number of industrial areas,” he said.
