VIVAnews - Indonesia's capital Jakarta is still in need of around 15 dams as an anticipation of high precipitation. As rainy season comes, it is common that flood is everywhere in Jakarta.

"Around 15 dams or polders are required to save Jakarta," said Jakarta Deputy Governor Prijanto on Tuesday, Nov 3.

According to him, polder dams are aimed at equipping Jakarta with flood mitigation system. "Today, we only have 308 units of pumps of 330.12 cubic meter per second," he said.

Polder system helps taking up floodwater from the areas of which locations are below sea level. The floodwater is then gathered in polder subsystem pool and will be gradually pumped out into sea. Jakarta now only has 29 polders.

40 percent of Jakarta grounds, especially those in North Jakarta, are below sea level. Those regions are most of the time inundated by water during rainy season.

Meanwhile, the yearly pump management budget always increases. On the other hand, the budget for building flood mitigation pump decreases.
