VIVAnews - Three Sumatran tigers (Phantera Tigris Sumatrae) are wandering around two areas in Bengkulu which are Seluma and Kaur regencies.

Estimation has it that two tigers are likely in Seluma and one in Kaur, according to the Head of Conservation Section of Area II BKSDA Bengkulu, Jaja Mulyana in Bengkulu on Sunday, November 1.

The tigers in Seluma are a tigress and her cub while the one in Kaur is only a female tiger. The tigers in Seluma are suspected of coming from Talang Beruk in local protected forest Semidang Bukit Kabu. The footprints were found in Puguk village and Lubuk Resam.

Meanwhile, the footprints in Kaur were coming from a Limited Production Forest (HPT) within the area of Tanjung Aur and Air Bacang near the borderline of Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (TNBBS).

According to Mulyana, the tigers brought fears to the locals but are not allowed to be hunted nor killed because they already are in their habitat which is now becoming a public land.

BKSDA would not catch the tigers, let alone killing them because the area is one of the tigers’ regular hunting paths.

The locals remain cautious towards the animals although they would stay away from humans unless they are bothered.

However, cattle like cows and goats are easy target. Therefore, the owners are expected to keep their cattle properly.

The Head of Linau village, Maje sub district, Kaur regency, Sirajudin said earlier that the tigers’ footprints were more often found lately by the locals. One time, they even saw the tigers walking off the land.

But, the tigers immediately ran away without any attempt to bother humans. Mulyana said they were probably hunting for food while most of the parts of the land have been turned into fields and gardens.

“We are instructing the locals to be alert. Keep the cows and the goats inside the farms and don’t let them go to the forest,“ Mulyana said as quoted by tvone.co.id.
