VIVAnews - PT Indosat Mega Media (IM2) has announced that they are supporting the open source technology. They claimed that 50 percent of the total number of the company’s servers has been installed with open-source-based applications and systems.
The support for open source is also indicated by the participation of the Indosat’s subsidiary in the world’s class Global Conference on Open Source (GCOS) at the Shangri-La Jakarta on October 26 to 27.
The event was officiated by Minister of Communication and Information Tifatul Sembiring and was attended by Brazilian Ambassador to Indonesia Edmundo Sussumu Fujita.
“We’ll be propping up the development of open source in Indonesia, so that computer use will be increasing due to the accessibility via open source,“ IM2 CEO Indar Atmanto addressed a press conference on October 27.
During the GCOS, IM2 provided free internet access via Wi-Fi technology with the speed of 2Mbps. An internet café, where the visitors could be connected to the internet via five notebooks installed with Linux operating system, was also established.
“Since the company was opened for the first time in 2000, we’ve been implementing open-source-based operating system,“ Atmanto said. “Currently, some of IM2’s internal and external major applications are open-source-based. The examples are Top Up System, Payment Gateway, i-Pay, Corporate Email, Web Server and others”
GCOS, which has been annually held since 2004, attracted more than 500 participants from all over the world to meet and have a discussion with other open source users.
